Humboldt Park Birdsgiving Stroll

  • Humboldt Park 1301 North Humboldt Drive Chicago, IL, 60622 United States (map)

Join us for a slow-paced outing at Humboldt Park. In late November this park is bustling with late migrants, including Fox, White-throated, and Swamp Sparrows, as well as winter residents such as Cooper's Hawks, American Tree Sparrows, and Dark-eyed Juncos.

We will begin the event with a 20-minute sit in which we will hone our observation skills and use mindfulness techniques to enjoy the species that find us, while learning about individual birds and the stories they have to tell. You are encouraged to bring a small notebook to record your observations.

Next we will take a stroll around the park, focusing on the behavior of birds and taking time to understand why we know what we know about our feathered friends. This walk is designed for beginning birders, people with mobility challenges, or anyone who prefers their birding on the slow side.

Leader: Robyn Detterline

You must RSVP in advance! Pre-registration is required for the bird walk. Please contact Robyn Detterline (rdetterline@gmail.com) or Chris Holden (twoheadedvireo@gmail.com) at least 24 hours in advance if you cannot attend or with questions.

Accessibility:
Total trip distance is approximately 2 miles and will take place mostly on wide paved, crushed-gravel, or wood-chip trails that are relatively level with minimal incline. We may leave the trail at times to walk through the grass for a better view of the birds. Any recent rain may create muddy conditions.

Restrooms are unavailable.

Weather/Attire/Other:
Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Please bring bottled water. Dress for the weather, which may require a light or heavy jacket as well as gloves. Hats and sunscreen are recommended. Loaner binoculars will be available.
