Orland Grassland was once farmland, but it has been a site of habitat restoration since 2002. This area, which now includes prairie, wetlands, open ponds, oak savannas, shrublands and woodlands, attracts grassland birds such as Henslow’s Sparrow, Bobolink, Dickcissel, Field sparrow, and Eastern Meadowlark. Join us as we look for these specialty grassland birds as well as woodpeckers, flycatchers, and other summering birds.
Accessibility/Attire: We'll be walking a total distance of about three miles on a combination of unpaved and grass surfaces. Sturdy shoes or boots are recommended. Trails may be muddy especially if there is recent rain, so rubber boots may be necessary (weather dependent). Ticks are known to be found in Orland Grassland. It is highly recommended that you wear long pants (tucked into socks if possible), and treat clothing with permethrin or Off. Bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated.
